Organisational Routines:Multiple Learning Mechanisms

Abstract

Organisational routines are central to organisational learning processes and the conceptualisation of organisational routine is problematic as it has attracted multiple interpretations. This paper conceptualises
routine at the cognitive and socio-interactional levels. Learning of routines take different levels of individual cognitions, group cognitions and organisational cognitions. The cognitions wholly internal to the individual
take shape in the social and interactional activities of group and organisation. There are different mechanisms that suggest the development of group and organisational cognitions that become the foundation of
organisational routines. The different mechanisms of social and cognitive processes explicate the wayroutines are actively learned in the organization.
